My Pledge to Oregonians and Americans
I pledge to rely only on the Constitution for guidance on Senate votes.
I pledge to defend the sovereignty of each state in accordance with the Tenth Amendment.
I believe the most important function of the Federal Government is a strong national defense. I pledge to fight for a non-interventionist foreign policy putting the interests of the United States first. I will vote to repeal the War Powers Act of 1973, and to approve wars fought only with a congressional Declaration of War in accordance with Article One, Section 8 of the Constitution. I pledge to close the over 700 American military bases in over 130 countries, ending our foreign empire.
I support reform of Washington, D.C. I will vote for a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget, as well as a presidential line-item veto. I pledge to vote for a constitutional amendment requiring term-limits on Senators and congressmen.
I pledge to fight for lower taxes. I believe lower taxes must be accompanied by decreased spending. I realize that any tax on individual income amounts to the idea that government owns the fruits of every individual’s labor. I believe a lessened tax burden on Americans is the most effective path to job creation.
I pledge to fight for a strong currency. I believe in a dollar backed by gold. I support efforts to audit and abolish the Federal Reserve and thereby end the boom-bust economic cycle it encourages.
I pledge to fight for a free market. I oppose efforts for a government takeover of healthcare. I pledge to repeal any such legislation. I believe the only way to make healthcare more affordable for Americans is to take the Federal Government out of the process of current strangling regulation. I pledge to fight for the right of individuals to purchase health insurance across state lines. I oppose any legislation imposing “protective” tariffs on imported goods. I will oppose any efforts to bailout private companies, as well as “stimulate” the economy through more government spending.
I believe in the free and secure movement of individuals and goods. I pledge to oppose amnesty for anyone in the country illegally. I pledge to fight for a secure border, but also to make it easier for individuals wishing to legally enter the United States. I support a guest-worker program for foreign workers.
I believe that all human relationships should be consensual. Those that aren’t violate our natural rights. I pledge to fight to end the failed War on Drugs. I pledge to support a woman’s right to choose an abortion but oppose any federal legislation providing tax-payer dollars for abortions. I oppose compulsory service of any kind in accordance with moral absolutism. I favor voluntary action over government force, and realize that charity is more effective at fighting poverty than government hand-outs. I realize government welfare is essentially theft, in accordance with moral absolutism.
I believe government should exist exclusively to protect the rights of the individual - the natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I will vote against any federal legislation overstepping this rightful role of government. I favor the repeal of any such laws over passing any new ones. I believe in divine providence: that America was and is destined to be a land governed in liberty with the consent of the governed. I pledge to Oregonians my life, fortune, and sacred honor as your next voice in the Senate of the United States.
