Immigration Policy

As Ron Paul so aptly put it, “a country cannot have open borders and a welfare state at the same time.” Protecting our borders is a valid and necessary function of government, but we must understand why those who come here illegally do. I am not for amnesty (Reagan granted it once before) but I am for a cleaner and easier system by which those who wish to become citizens can. We are a melting pot, yes, but we cannot make it so attractive for those to come illegally, thus discrediting those who jumped through all the rigorous hoops to get here lawfully (not to mention the rapid increase in costs that illegals burden us with). A step in the right direction would be for simplifying the legal immigration process, increased security of our borders, offering worker visas to qualified individuals (thus increasing the tax base and decreasing the welfare roles) and increased welfare reform.
